BEIJING, July 20 -- China plans to build 20,000 kilometers of railways in its western regions in the next 10 years, which may involve a total investment of RMB1.5 trillion, the China Daily reported last Friday.
The railway project is one part of the 23 major projects recently announced by the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, as part of the country's Western Development project.
The 23 projects will be launched this year, with an initial investment of RMB 682.2 billion.
Pursuant to the plan, by 2020, the total length of China's railway network will exceed 120,000 kilometers, while the railways in the western regions will be expanded to over 50,000 kilometers.
The total length of operational railways in the western regions increased to 30,000 kilometers in 2008 from 20,000 kilometers in 2000, 36% of the nation's total, according to statistics from the Ministry of Railways.
