Dowa Sees Copper Output to Sept Up 30 pct yr/yr

TOKYO, April 6 (Reuters) - Japan's Dowa Holdings Co Ltd said on Tuesday it plans to produce 9,495 tonnes of copper a month in the next six months, up 30 percent from a year
earlier.

The Onahama smelter, in which Dowa has a stake, will operate at near full capacity to meet the target, as demand for copper starts to recover from a trough, a company official said.

"But we don't expect recovery to accelerate. Rather, we expect demand to move sideways for a while," the official said.

Most Japanese smelters started producing about 10 percent less copper than their capacity in early 2009 as the worst economic downturn in decades hit manufacturers and led to a sharp decline in the consumption of metals.

But Japan's two big smelters last week raised their output target for the April-September period, the first half of the business year that began on April 1.

Following are details of Dowa's plans for monthly output, with comparisons against estimated monthly production in the second half of the last financial year and actual production in the first half of the last financial year.  (In tonnes, except for gold):
