Lead price tumbled for 40 days in straight to RMB8,100/mt amid global financial crisis second half 2008, yet bottomed out ahead of other metals during conventional consumption season late 2008 and early 2009. The pursuing of short-term profit has hurt the industry as a whole. The meltdown in global real economy is far from over.

Zinc price hovered at lows throughout 2008. Producers like lead/zinc mines, zinc smelting, galvanizing and zinc-alloy casting companies continued production cut and limitation.

2009 Focus In

Lead Will lead demand-supply be in a balance or fluctuation in 2009? Will lead concentrate market remain a seller's market or having an increase in supply? Will piles of grass-root and expansion smelting projects be released as expected?

Will lead imports keep pouring into China or loss advantages? What is the status and projection of downstream demand?

Zinc Chinese government has collected reserve twice at 59kt and 100kt respectively so far 2009. Provinces including Yunnan, Shaanxi, Guangxi have collected reserve as well. Zinc price has leveled off, but has it bottomed out?

Domestic zinc concentrate supply remains tight. Zinc imports are pouring into domestic market given the rise in spot price.
