The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s September 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook forecasts U.S. electricity generation to grow by 2.2% in 2026 and a further 1.7% in 2027, primarily driven by data center development and increased manufacturing activity. However, coal’s share of generation is projected to fall from 17% in 2025 to 16% in 2026 and 14% in 2027. Solar and wind shares are expected to increase, while natural gas remains at 40%.
