Silver Surges 7.07% as Peru's Energy Crisis Threatens Global Supply

Published: May 12, 2026 09:08
[SMM Silver Express] Spot silver surged 7.07% on May 11, breaking above $86/oz. Peru, the world's second-largest silver producer accounting for ~14% of global output, issued an energy crisis emergency decree. With mining operations highly dependent on stable power, energy shortages are expected to reduce global marginal silver supply, further boosting prices amid low inventory levels.

Fed Hints at December Rate Hike, Precious Metals Face Near-Term Pressure Amid US-Iran Talks
Yesterday, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at its rate decision meeting. However, market participants believe that remarks made during the press conference suggest a high probability of one rate hike in December to rein in inflation. Market participants also note that a US–Iran agreement could potentially be signed within the next few days. That said, given that precious metals already showed fading upward momentum in the first half of this week, the market impact of geopolitical developments may now be increasingly limited.
