EU, 중국에 희토류 관련 회담 초청… 수출 통제 대화 합의

US mineral sands producer Atlantic Strategic Minerals (ASM) announced the completion of the feasibility study (FS) for its monazite project, confirming the technical feasibility and a fast track to production for constructing a domestic rare earth processing facility. The study shows that, in its initial phase, the project will build a demonstration plant that utilizes existing by-product streams to produce 1,000 mt of monazite concentrates annually, providing an immediate domestic source of rare earth raw material. Through further expansion and processing of third-party raw materials, capacity can be increased fivefold to approximately 5,000 mt per year. The company stated that the monazite project is built on existing operational foundations, and the demonstration plant can be developed and commissioned within approximately 12 months.

캐나다 국제통상부 장관 시두 마닌더는 인터뷰에서 오타와와 도쿄가 흑연, 갈륨 등 광물에 대한 공동 채굴 프로젝트, 구매 계약, 공동 비축 등 협력 방안을 논의 중이라고 밝혔다. “우리는 일본에 캐나다의 핵심 광물을 개발할 기회를 제공하고 있습니다.” 그는 배터리의 핵심 소재인 흑연을 예로 들며 누보 몽드 그라파이트와 파나소닉 간의 흑연 구매 계약을 언급했다. 시두 장관은 180개 기업·단체에서 약 300명이 참여한 대규모 대표단을 이끌고 도쿄를 방문 중이며, 이는 북미 국가가 아시아 태평양 지역에 파견한 사절단 중 역대 최대 규모다. 일본 및 서방 정부와 제조업체들은 희토류 광물의 안정적인 공급처를 모색해 왔다.

나이지리아 당국이 최근 몇 년간 이 나라에서 가장 중요한 핵심 광물 발견을 발표했다. 아프리카 최대 산유국인 나이지리아는 경제 다각화와 글로벌 에너지 전환에 필요한 핵심 원자재 공급국으로 자리매김하려 하고 있다. 지난주 아부자에서 열린 아프리카 천연자원·에너지 투자 정상회의에서 나이지리아는 카두나 주에서 새로운 복합 금속 광상을 발견했다고 밝혔다. 이 광상에는 백금족 금속, 금, 니켈, 리튬, 희토류의 고품위 매장량이 포함되어 있다. 델레 알라케 광물자원부 장관은 카두나를 "세계적 수준의" 광상구이자 최근 몇 년간 나이지리아 광업 부문에서 가장 중요한 진전 중 하나라고 평가했다. 이 발견은 민간 기업 스테론 마이닝과 나이지리아 지질조사국(NGSA)이 공동으로 수행했으며, 이후 NGSA가 확인했다.
