Microsoft has expanded its carbon removal credit agreement with Stockholm Exergi, increasing the total volume to 5.08 million tons of CO₂ over 10 years, up from 3.33 million tons. Stockholm Exergi called it the world’s largest carbon removal deal.
The project uses BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) technology at a $1.3 billion facility, which provides heating to Stockholm. CO₂ captured at the plant will be transported to Norway for permanent storage under the North Sea.
The CO₂ storage will be carried out in partnership with the Northern Lights project, led by Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, reinforcing Microsoft's efforts to offset emissions.
