Silicon Metal Production Data for April: Down More Than 10% MoM 【SMM Analysis】

According to SMM market communications, silicon metal production in April 2025 was 301,000 mt, down 12% MoM and 16% YoY. From January to April 2025, the cumulative silicon metal production decreased by 12.6% YoY.
Silicon metal production in March decreased MoM, primarily due to large-scale production cuts by a major plant in Xinjiang in April, in addition to production cuts by silicon enterprises in Gansu. Regarding new capacity, due to the continuous decline in silicon metal prices, the main silicon metal futures contract fell by over 12% in April, leading to delays in the commissioning of some new silicon metal projects.
In May, silicon metal production nationwide is expected to increase slightly by 0.4% MoM, but with significant uncertainty. In Sichuan, production is expected to increase MoM due to the release of commissioned capacity and the resumption of a small amount of production capacity. In Yunnan, the production schedule of some operating silicon enterprises is expected to decrease in May, with limited output from new projects and no willingness to resume production among halted silicon enterprises, leading to an expected decrease in Yunnan's production MoM. In north China, due to the continuous decline in silicon prices, costs are under renewed pressure, and there is a possibility of sudden production cuts by silicon enterprises in the region, introducing uncertainty into the regional supply.
