China's power battery installation volume jumps 20.1% YoY in Jan. 2025, despite MoM drop

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In January 2025, China's power battery installations totaled 38.8GWh, marking a 48.6% month-on-month plunge but a 20.1% jump year-on-year, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance ("CAPBIIA"). Among them, ternary lithium batteries accounted for 8.5GWh, representing 22.1% of total installations—a 40.4% decrease from the previous month and a 32.2% drop year-on-year. Meanwhile, the installed volume of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries reached 30.2GWh, making up 77.9% of the total, indicating a 50.5% month-on-month decline but a 53.5% year-on-year surge.

China's combined production of power and other batteries stood at 107.8GWh in January, down 13.4% from December 2024, but spiked 63.2% from a year earlier.

Sales of power batteries and other batteries totaled 80.4GWh in the month, reflecting a 36.5% drop over a month earlier, but a 40.8% soar from a year earlier. Specifically, power battery sales reached 62.9GWh, accounting for 78.3% of total sales, down 34.7% month-on-month, but up 24.6% year-on-year. Other battery sales amounted to 17.5GWh, representing 21.7% of total sales, down 42.1% from the previous month, but soaring 163.6% year-on-year.

In January, a total of 36 power battery companies in China had their batteries installed onto new energy vehicles (NEVs), two fewer than the same period last year. The top three companies contributed 29.5GWh, which made up 76.2% of total installations, while the top five and top ten accounted for 85.5% (33.2GWh) and 96% (37.2GWh), respectively.

China exported 17.5GWh of power and other batteries last month, making up 21.7% of total sales. While exports declined 20.1% month-on-month, they grew 67.1% year-on-year. Of those, power battery exports reached 11.1GWh, representing 63.7% of total exports, down 14.2% from December 2024, but up 9.1% from the year-ago period.
