US Aluminum Beverage Can Recycling Rate Hits Decade Low at 43%

In recent years, the recycling rate of aluminum beverage cans in the US has declined. A report released on Thursday by the Aluminum Association and the Can Manufacturers Institute indicated that the current recycling rate is 43%. This figure is lower than the average recycling rate of 52% tracked since 1990, reaching the lowest level in decades and performing worse compared to other countries. Scott Breen, Vice President of Sustainability at CMI, stated, "We are facing a stagnant situation because the fundamentals of the US recycling system have remained relatively small." Breen and his partners are hopeful that the advancement of policies such as extended producer responsibility laws can improve this situation.
