The Biden administration will impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum products transshipped through Mexico to prevent China from evading its existing tariffs. These measures, effective Wednesday (July 10), impose a 25% tariff on steel imports from Mexico that are not melted and poured in the country, the United States or Canada, and a 10% tariff on aluminum products arriving through Mexico that are smelted or cast in China, Russia, Iran or Belarus. US officials said that in 2023, the United States imported about 3.8 million tons of steel from Mexico, of which 13% came from outside North America; it imported 105,000 tons of aluminum from Mexico, of which 6% was smelted or cast outside North America. This measure is jointly formulated with Mexican President López Obrador, aimed at preventing import surges triggered by China's supply excesses to protect the domestic market.
