At the end of February, a new silica mining project with an annual output of 100,000 tons was established in Baoshan, Yunnan. According to statistics, 5 silica mines were canceled in Yunnan in 2023, and the cumulative annual mining volume of canceled silica mines reached 230,000 tons. The new mining rights plus the new projects in 2024 totaled 200,000 tons, and this new mining rights project has its own downstream industrial silicon manufacturers, and the silica resources are mainly for self-use.
Although it is currently in the dry season, Yunnan's local downstream industrial silicon operating rate is sluggish and the demand for silica raw materials is weak. However, after May 24, local silicon factories began to prepare for the procurement of raw materials for the resumption of production in the wet season. The demand for silica is expected to rise. By then, silica supply shortages may become more apparent.
Currently, some silicon companies in the Baoshan area of Yunnan have shut down furnaces for maintenance in March, and silicon companies in the Nujiang area have reported that silicon prices are currently low and they are not willing to resume production in the short term. The local comprehensive operating rate remains sluggish, and the overall silica demand is not strong. And some silicon companies have connected with overseas silica resources in surrounding areas and Southeast Asia such as Myanmar to supplement the local silica resource gaps. Currently, there is no major gap in silica supply in Yunnan.
