SK to Mass Produce Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries in 2026
According to Reuters, South Korean battery company SK On plans to begin mass production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in 2026 to supply several car manufacturers. SK On's competitors LG New Energy and Samsung SDI have also announced similar goals. Car manufacturers are expanding the use of different types of battery chemistry, such as lithium iron phosphate, to reduce costs and avoid supply chain issues. SK On's downstream customers include Ford, Volkswagen, and Hyundai, among others. SK On is considering producing LFP batteries in Europe or China, with production bases for other projects in the US, South Korea, Hungary, and China.
