"In August 2023, Myanmar's Wa state, which accounts for over 90% of the tin production in Myanmar, announced measures to prohibit tin exploration, mining, and processing, and strictly enforce production shutdown by conducting inspections of mines and dispersing Myanmar workers. It is anticipated that production may not resume until February 2024, and even upon receiving notice to resume production, at least one month of preparation time will be needed to return to normal production.
Since Indonesia banned all raw ore exports in January 2014, the supply of onshore tin resources has tightened, and the difficulty and declining grade of offshore tin mining has limited tin production. In 2024, there are only two new tin mining projects globally: the Congo's Bisie Mpama South tin mine and Brazil's Massangana Tin tailings project. These factors may exacerbate disruptions to global tin supply, leading to a potential long-term reduction in tin supply."
