Nickel ore output across mines in the world ballooned 21% to 3.3 million mt in 2022, according to preliminary estimates from the US Geological Survey. Production in Indonesia, the world's largest nickel ore producer, surged 54% year-on-year to 1.6 million mt in 2022, followed by 330,000 mt in the Philippines and 220,000 mt in Russia. The US Geological Survey said the increase in nickel ore production in Indonesia was partly due to the ongoing commissioning of integrated NPI and stainless steel projects. In addition, several companies continue to develop projects to produce intermediate matte or mixed nickel-cobalt hydroxides, which will be used as feedstock for the production of battery-grade nickel sulphate.
