For a long time, due to the higher molecular structure activity of ternary lithium battery materials, its safety index has been recognized as a pain point and difficulty in the industry. And "no fire" is the most important and difficult technology fortress for the safety of ternary lithium battery pack.

In order to overcome this technical problem, major car companies and power battery manufacturers have shown their own talents. For example, Ningde era launched the so-called "never fire" battery, GAC launched magazine battery, Dongfeng Lantu launched "three nothing" battery, Great Wall launched Dayu battery.

Recently, Geely's luxury intelligent pure electric car brand, polar krypton, conducted an acupuncture test on the battery pack of its first model, polar krypton 001, and successfully achieved no fire, no explosion, no obvious deformation and no heat spread.

It is understood that the polar krypton 001 battery package acupuncture test using an 8 mm steel needle from the length of the battery pack triggered the thermal runaway, the battery pack BMS touched the heating event alarm signal in time, the battery package that was triggered out of control also appeared the situation of smoke, the highest temperature of the battery pack reached 801.4 degrees Celsius, and there was no explosion and fire.

Generally speaking, once the power battery has an internal short circuit, the whole battery will carry out Discharge through the short circuit point, and a large amount of energy will be released through the short circuit point in a short time (up to 70% of the energy in a single cell will be released within 60s). The battery temperature will rise rapidly, leading to the decomposition of positive and negative active materials and electrolyte combustion, and in serious cases, the battery will catch fire and explode.

The main principle of acupuncture test is to pierce the diaphragm, cause positive and negative pole short circuit, artificially create short circuit point inside the battery, simulate the short circuit phenomenon caused by conductive foreign body piercing, so as to verify the safety of power battery. Therefore, acupuncture experiments have been used by major car companies and battery manufacturers to verify the safety of their power battery packs.

The polar krypton 001 ternary lithium battery pack passed the acupuncture test, which can be said to reassure consumers who question the safety and security of ternary lithium batteries, and once again set off a debate about the two major technical routes of ternary lithium and lithium iron phosphate batteries. it even escalates the "war" between the most representative suppliers on these two major technological routes.

Lichningde era

The polar krypton 001 ternary lithium battery pack has two capacities, 86kWh and 100kWh. Among them, the 100kWh battery pack adopts CTP moduleless packaging technology, the NEDC has a life span of more than 700km, and the supplier is Ningde Times.

In the Ningde era, the passage of the above acupuncture test is undoubtedly a powerful endorsement.

At the end of March 2020, BYD officially launched the blade battery with "high safety" as the selling point, and launched a battery safety debate with the Ningde era around the acupuncture test.

BYD's "positive Gang" also triggered two consecutive counterattacks in the Ningde era.

On May 22, 2020, Ningde Times released a video of an acupuncture test in which a steel needle is used to stab the battery pack (rather than the battery cell), but it is broken when the steel needle is pierced into the battery pack in the experiment.

On May 23, 2020, the Ningde era released the second acupuncture test video, but the Ningde era acupuncture test is very blurred in terms of clarity and camera perspective.

In the end, BYD not only won a lot of praise, but also won the victory from the perspective of security struggle.

The result of the polar krypton 001 battery acupuncture test, in the general direction, is to endorse the safety of ternary lithium batteries again; from the enterprise's point of view, it diluted the debate over battery safety around the acupuncture test last year. Ningde era lost to the adverse influence of BYD.

At present, it seems that the battery safety level of Ningde era and BYD can be said to be equal, but the "war" over the supremacy of power batteries between the two has never stopped.

The struggle for supremacy

In 2002, in the battery field, BYD has achieved the first place in China and the second place in the world. At that time, the Ningde era had not yet been "born", and BYD had already gone public.

In 2015, BYD's advantage over the Ningde era was still very obvious, and the gap between the two sides narrowed in 2016, and the Ningde era began to overtake BYD in 2017.

Since then, the mode of catching up with each other has been opened between the two.

The battle of the market. According to the data of China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, from January to June this year, the top 10 domestic power battery installed companies are Ningde Times, BYD, LG Chemical, AVIC Lithium, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Yiwei Lithium, Honeycomb Energy, Funeng Technology, Tafel New Energy, and Jiewei Power. It is worth noting that although Ningde era failed to maintain its market share of more than 50 per cent, it still ranked first with 49.1 per cent, while BYD ranked second, with only 1.21 more units than 25.76GWh 's 1Gramble, with 7.65GWhh, accounting for 14.6 per cent.

This has always been a drawback brought about by BYD's "self-production and self-marketing" model. However, BYD's movements began to accelerate significantly.

Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD, announced at the launch of the new car in Chongqing on April 7 that "from now on, all its pure electric models will be fully equipped with blade batteries and fully use acupuncture testing as the enterprise standard." At the same time, it stressed, "almost every car brand you can think of is discussing cooperation with Fudi batteries, and blade batteries will be installed on new energy models of mainstream brands at home and abroad one after another."

In addition, in the first half of this year, BYD sold a total of 246689 new cars, including 154579 new energy vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 154.76 per cent. In the second half of the year, BYD will also launch a number of pure electric and plug-in hybrid models.

Customer competition. On the evening of June 28th, Ningde Times announced that it had signed a new agreement with Tesla on June 25th. The new agreement stipulates that Ningde Times will supply lithium-ion power battery products to Tesla from January 2022 to December 2025.

The extension of the cooperation agreement means the upgrading of cooperation between the Ningde era and Tesla. At the same time, it also shows that the degree of binding between the two sides is further deepened, which is not absolutely beneficial to the Ningde era.

It is worth pointing out that recently, it has been reported that Ningde Times plans to build an annual capacity 80GWh superbattery factory south of Tesla's Shanghai factory, which aims to provide Tesla with half of the batteries used for electric vehicles and roof energy storage worldwide, thus becoming Tesla's largest supplier.

In the case of BYD, it was revealed in April that BYD would produce electric vehicles for Toyota, which would be completed independently by BYD from the bottom technology, electronic control system, motor and battery and other core technology. the follow-up will be submitted to Toyota for acceptance. This means that BYD has made great progress in its foreign cooperation.

In terms of battery supply, currently identified customers include Red Flag brand and Ford Motor. In addition, including Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz are also rumored to be BYD's partners.

The dispute over production capacity. Ningde Times has planned eight wholly-owned production bases, namely, Ningde Zhangwan District (Dongqiao / Hudong / Huxi), Ningde Cheliwan, Ningde Fuding, Qinghai Xining, Jiangsu Liyang, Sichuan Yibin, Guangdong Zhaoqing and Thuringen, Germany, with a total planned production capacity of more than 410GWH, which is expected to exceed 94.5GWh by the end of this year.

In addition, Ningde Times has also set up joint venture plants with automobile companies such as SAIC, FAW, Guangzhou Automobile, Dongfeng and Geely, with a total production capacity of more than 145GWh. the joint venture company is expected to reach 42GWh by the end of this year.

BYD has 8 production bases, including Baolong in Shenzhen, Kengzi in Huizhou, Hi-tech in Xi'an, Xining in Qinghai, Guiyang in Guizhou, Bishan in Chongqing, Ningxiang in Changsha and Bengbu in Anhui. The blade battery has been put into production and the planned production capacity has reached 135GWh.

Summary

Not only the "war" on the supremacy of power batteries between Ningde era and BYD has never stopped, but the competition between ternary batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries is becoming more and more anxious.

In the latest production and sales data of power batteries from January to June, lithium iron phosphate batteries have the potential to "press" ternary batteries.

From January to June, the output of ternary batteries totaled 36.9GWh, accounting for 49.3 percent of the total output, an increase of 149.2 percent over the same period last year; the cumulative sales of ternary batteries were 27.2GWh, an increase of 115.6 percent over the same period last year; and the total loading of ternary batteries was 30.2GWh. accounting for 57.5% of the total loading, an increase of 139.0% over the same period last year.

From January to June, the output of lithium iron phosphate batteries totaled 37.7 GWh, accounting for 50.5 percent of the total output, up 334.4 percent over the same period last year; the cumulative sales of lithium iron phosphate batteries were 30.8 GWh, an increase of 260.0 percent over the same period last year; and the total loading of lithium iron phosphate batteries was 22.2GWh. accounting for 42.3% of the total loading, an increase of 368.5% over the same period last year.

In comparison, the output and sales volume of ternary battery is lower than that of lithium iron phosphate battery; in terms of loading capacity, lithium iron phosphate battery is 22.2GWH, which is lower than that of 30.2 GWH of ternary battery, but the year-on-year growth rate of lithium iron phosphate battery is much higher than that of ternary battery.

Looking forward to the future, the main technical route of ternary battery in the future is high nickel, accordingly, the energy density of ternary battery will increase greatly, and the cost will gradually decrease, but lithium iron phosphate battery will still be strong in the short term.
