Lithium carbonate prices to continue rally amid falling inventories

According to Reuters on August 28, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s state-backed artisanal cobalt buyer, Entreprise Générale du Cobalt (EGC), has fully utilized 100% of its allocated cobalt export quota. So far this year, EGC has exported 3,995 tonnes of contained cobalt and around 1,400 tonnes of copper. While some producers have been unable to fully use their quotas due to complex export procedures, EGC has completed its entire allocation. EGC currently sells cobalt mainly through Trafigura, Mercuria and Traxys, and plans to strengthen direct cooperation with battery manufacturers, automakers and other end-users to expand the market for traceable artisanal cobalt. Artisanal and small-scale mining accounts for about 15%-25% of cobalt production in the DRC. EGC aims to improve traceability through formalized management and meet international responsible sourcing requirements. It is currently working with five mining cooperatives, with another 12 partnerships under development. On logistics, EGC recently made its first shipment through the Lobito Corridor, exporting 587 tonnes of cobalt and 500 tonnes of copper cathodes. Transit time was around five days, significantly shorter than about 28 days via Dar es Salaam and more than 30 days via Durban, helping improve export efficiency and supply-chain flexibility.

라이온타운 리소스(Liontown Resources)는 서호주 캐슬린 밸리(Kathleen Valley) 리튬 사업장에서 노천 채굴을 완료하고 이 프로젝트를 전면 지하 채굴 운영으로 전환했다. 회사는 FY27 말까지 연간 약 280만 톤의 채굴 속도를 목표로 하고 있으며, 다음 달 캐슬린 밸리 확장의 다음 단계에 대한 최종 투자 결정을 내릴 예정이다. FY26 동안 캐슬린 밸리는 스포듀민 정광 391,992건조톤을 생산하고 381,997건조톤을 출하했으며, 생산량과 출하량 모두 평균 Li₂O 5.1%를 기록했다. 라이온타운은 또한 확장을 위해 일부 초기 공사와 장납기 장비 조달에 착수했으며, 여기에는 5.5MW 볼밀이 포함되어 더 높은 처리량과 회수율 개선을 뒷받침한다.
