SMM4, 17 Jun: Jupiter Mining, listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, announced that the Department of Mineral Resources had approved Tshippi é Ntle Manganese Mine to partially resume mining at Tshipi Borwa Manganese Mine. The Tshipi Borwa deposit is an open-pit manganese deposit in the Kalahari manganese field in Northern Cape Province.
Jupiter said Tshipi management is currently working with contractors, suppliers and Transnet to co-ordinate a partial restart of production and exports, Jupiter chief executive Priyank Thapliyal said in an update on South Africa's extension of the national epidemic lock to April 30.
Jupiter closed its Tshipi Borwa manganese mine last month and suspended manganese exports for three weeks until April 16. During this period, the health and safety of all parties remain critical, Thapliyal stressed. If there is further guidance, Jupiter will update the market.
After South Africa's initial announcement of a 21-day lock-up, Jupiter said in an earlier release that critical maintenance, safety and dehydration of the mine would continue to ensure that production could resume quickly after the lock-up period. In the 12 months ended 29 February, the Tshipi mine produced and exported 3.4 million tons of manganese.
