SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): e-Stewards and R2 has announced several proactive steps to address the growing challenges facing the CRT recycling domain.

The e-Stewards certification will publish a list of approved downstream CRT processors for the benefit of certified companies. The final list is expected to be released before the end of this year, after considering the suggestions received during the one-month public comment period. The e-Stewards have announced that an initial list featuring four “conditionally allowable” facilities-Doe Run, Glencore, Teck Resources and Kuusakoski, will be released later this month.

According to e-Stewards, Illinois-based Com2 Recycling Solutions is still “under review”. The operation is currently considered as “preferred” option, but will be finally authorized after reviewing the new data with respect to processing of CRT glass. In addition, Closed Loop Refining and Recovery, Dlubak Glass and Nulife Glass are also being listed as preferred option by e-Stewards. These facilities are unlikely to be approved in the upcoming interpretation, e-Stewards stated. The Spain-based Camacho, that uses CRT glass to manufacture tiles, has also not been approved by the standard.

Also, R2’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) is reportedly considering key amendments to the standard so as to accommodate additional number of approved outlets. SERI- the housing body for R2 standard noted that the certification standards are currently passing through a period of change. The TAC meeting is expected to have wide-ranging discussions on whether the current R2 standard is capable to meet the challenges faced by the industry.

Meantime, both e-Stewards and R2 certifications noted that abrupt idling of the panel and funnel furnaces by Videocon’s India-based facility has badly impacted the flow of CRT glasses from the US. The glass-to-glass recycling facility of Videocon has been a major receiver of CRT glasses from the US.
