Shifting the Large Sample Construction Steel Social Inventory from Decline to Increase

Published: Jun 11, 2026 10:30
Construction steel social inventory: According to an SMM survey, the total social inventory of construction steel in the current period shifted from decline to increase. As of June 11, 2026, SMM construction steel social inventory stood at 5.3286 million mt, up 15,700 mt WoW, an increase of 0.30%. This was mainly due to increased arrivals in most regions during the survey period, while market demand remained weak under the impact of rainfall and college entrance exam controls, leading to a slight inventory buildup this week.

Social inventory by region: By region, inventory performance varied slightly. In north China, the proportion of direct delivery from some steel mills increased while the proportion of market delivery decreased, and inventory continued its previous destocking pace. In east China, bar rolling lines at some steel mills were shut down, reducing supply, and combined with increased outward shipments from some mills, inventory continued to decline. In central China, construction progress slowed down due to noise control measures for the college entrance exam in most areas, and inventory shifted from decline to increase. In south China, some EAF steel mills resumed production as planned, and combined with weak demand, inventory continued to accumulate. In northeast China, a notable increase in resource arrivals led to continued inventory buildup. In other regions, inventory basically maintained slight fluctuations.

[SMM Iron & Steel] India's RINL Halts Steel Melt Shop After Deadly Explosion
India's state-run steelmaker RINL has suspended operations at its Steel Melt Shop 1 (SMS-1) following an explosion on June 11 that killed nine workers and critically injured several others. During the incident, casting machines 1–4 were in operation. A second explosion at machine 2 occurred just 20 minutes later, disabling a crane and damaging equipment. Preliminary investigations point to a sudden release of trapped gases (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen) in molten steel as the likely cause. A separate molten metal spill at SMS-2 was reported 15–20 minutes prior. Operations remain halted.
