Perak: Rare Earth Mining Does Not Endanger the Environment

Published: Jul 1, 2025 18:58
According to Malaysian media reports, the Perak state government emphasized that the mining of non-radioactive rare earth elements (REEs) would not endanger environmental safety, with environmental protection being a top priority. The Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) stated that modern techniques would replace traditional excavation methods, such as in-situ leaching (ISL). ISL extracts REEs by injecting an ammonium sulfate solution that dissolves the REEs, thereby reducing land disruption. The pilot project in Mukim Kenering strictly adhered to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) guidelines to ensure minimal environmental impact. The country will prohibit any low-enriched uranium operations that violate standard operating procedures or institutional requirements. Perak's 1.7 million mt of REE reserves are mainly distributed in forest reserves. The Menteri Besar emphasized these measures at the launch of the 2030 State Government Progress Report.
