In response to the demands of businesses for stable production, enhanced transparency in industry information, and reduced transaction costs, the SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Index was created.

In response to the demands of businesses for stable production, enhanced transparency in industry information, and reduced transaction costs, the SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Index was created. This index calculates a representative price based on actual sales and bid prices of battery-grade lithium carbonate from key industry players, including lithium carbonate producers, cathode material producers, battery manufacturers, and automakers. The index is calculated using differing weights assigned to various data submitters and serves as a reference price for settling transactions involving battery-grade lithium carbonate. It reflects the most representative price of battery-grade lithium carbonate as of the publication date of the index.

How is the Fairness of the Index Ensured?

The SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Index has attained certification from the IOSCO, establishing SMM as the first and only third-party platform in China's non-ferrous sector to be recognized in this manner. IOSCO mandates that SMM’s pricing practices must adhere to strict standards of compliance and fairness. It conducts annual audits of SMM's pricing methodologies and processes, and requires continual refinement and updates to ensure the methodologies remain accurate and transparent.

What are the Specifications for the SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Index?

The SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Index requires products to conform to the YS/T582-2013 standard, which stipulates a minimum Li2CO3 purity of 99.5% and magnetic material content not exceeding 0.0003%. Prices reflected in the index are inclusive of tax, delivered, and based on bank acceptance payments. (Prices that do not meet these criteria are standardized to this specification before inclusion in the index calculation.)

When is the SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Index Published?

The index is released every trading day between 10:00 AM and 10:10 AM.

How is the SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Index Calculated?

1. Initial Weight Assignment:

Bilateral Assignment: Each side, buyers and sellers, is allocated a total weight of 50%, summing up to 100%. Here, sellers include lithium carbonate smelters, and buyers include cathode, battery cell, and end-product manufacturers (totaling 50 companies).

Individual Company Weight Assignment: Weights are assigned based on each company's purchasing volume/influence within its segment. The sum of a company's weights across different segments determines its initial weight. The calculation of weights for other participating companies follows a similar logic.

2. Daily Index Price Calculation: The daily index price is derived by multiplying each company's quoted price by its corresponding weight and aggregating these weighted prices.

3. Weight Adjustment:

Daily Adjustment: SMM analysts conduct regression analyses on the daily collected pricing data and verify extreme outliers. Companies providing prices are also asked for supporting evidence. If a company consistently fails to provide valid evidence, its weight is penalized according to the degree of deviation.

Periodic Adjustments: Due to the fast-paced expansion of the industry, SMM periodically reevaluates and adjusts the weights of companies based on the overall industry dynamics. However, companies that have been penalized previously cannot increase their weights through expansion alone.

How to Use the SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Price Index?

The SMM Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Price Index acts as a precise indicator of the current conditions in the battery-grade lithium carbonate spot market. It captures the nuances of market transactions and changes in the negotiation dynamics between buyers and sellers more sensitively than range-based pricing. This index represents the most accurate and representative daily price for battery-grade lithium carbonate. Companies can leverage the SMM index directly as a benchmark for pricing in contracts, thus minimizing transaction costs.

Data Source Statement: Except for publicly available information, all other data are processed by SMM based on publicly available information, market communication, and relying on SMM‘s internal database model. They are for reference only and do not constitute decision-making recommendations.
