Aluminum Operating Rate in Yunnan Region Update

Published: Feb 6, 2024 18:08
According to SMM's research findings, Yunnan Province is currently experiencing a dry season, with hydropower contribution remaining at a relatively low level. Enterprises have no immediate plans for production resumption and await clearer policy guidance from the power sector.

According to SMM's research findings, Yunnan aluminum operating capacity stood at approximately 4.49 million tons, showing no significant change compared to the previous period. Feedback from some enterprises indicates that Yunnan Province is currently experiencing a dry season, with hydropower contribution remaining at a relatively low level. Consequently, there are no substantial short-term expectations for increased industrial electricity demand, including electrolytic aluminum production. Enterprises have no immediate plans for production resumption and await clearer policy guidance from the power sector.

Data from the Yunnan Provincial Energy Bureau reveals that in 2023, the province's scale-above industrial electricity generation reached 3905.06 billion kilowatt-hours, marking a 3.5% increase from the previous year. Thermal power generation saw a substantial increase of 38.6%, reaching 640.29 billion kilowatt-hours, while wind power generation grew by 28.7% to 277.24 billion kilowatt-hours. Solar power generation surged by 131.8% to 89.88 billion kilowatt-hours. However, hydropower generation experienced a decline of 5.2%, totaling 2897.65 billion kilowatt-hours. The rapid growth in thermal power and new energy generation effectively offset the decrease in hydropower generation, resulting in a clean energy proportion of 83.6%.

Middle East Crisis Sparks Global Economic Slowdown and Inflation, UN Report Shows
The *World Economic Situation and Prospects as of Mid-2026* report released by the United Nations clearly pointed out that the Middle East crisis has posed a new round of shocks to the global economy, directly leading to a slowdown in global economic growth, a renewed climb in inflationary pressures, and a further intensification of global economic uncertainty. Notably, the impact of this crisis has been highly uneven, with developing countries bearing the brunt of the shocks. As things stand, global economic growth is expected to reach 2.5% in 2026, though this figure has been revised down by 0.2 percentage points from the January forecast.
