The Panama Canal Authority issued a notice on October 30 local time that due to the continuous lack of precipitation in the Canal watershed, the precipitation in October set a record low since 1950, and the water level of Gatun Lake dropped to the lowest level in history. Starting from the beginning of November, the Panama Canal will further reduce its daily transit capacity, and the number of vessels that can be booked to pass through the Canal will be reduced and will continue until February. Since the dry weather in July affected shipping, the cost of transporting propane and other fuels through the Panama Canal has risen sharply. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported Tuesday that as of September 29, the charter rate for a very large gas carrier (VLGC) on the Houston-Japan route had reached a record $250 per tonne, the highest level since the fixed price was first announced in 2016.
