ALBANY (Scrap Monster): The Owego, New York-headquartered Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling has announced opening of its first shredding facility apart from its flag ship facility. The New Castle facility was officially declared open on Saturday, May 7. This is the company’s 18th facility and will be known as Ben Weitsman of New Castle.

Renovation at the expense of $26 million

The facility occupies the the site of the former Ferrotech Corp. property at 526 S. Jefferson St. Upstae Shredding had bought the facility in December 2012 at a bankruptcy option by paying $2.2 million. The company had announced firm plans to demolish the building s at the site and construct an office building and nonferrous warehouse at the site.

Iron treasure

The construction works at the facility faced unexpected delay on account of bad winter weather conditions during that year. Interestingly, the company discovered piles of iron underground while digging the foundation. The recovered iron totaled nearly 6,000 tons, which were sold for cash. As per estimates, Weitsman Recycling nearly covered the cost of land purchase through sale of these iron.

State-of-the-art facility

According to Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, it had not applied for any subsidies from local government. The facility is equipped with all new equipment including 3,000 hp Wendt shredder, which had witnessed unusual permitting delays. The company has taken adequate attention towards proper displacement of storm water. It has also decided to schedule multiple dust sweepings throughout the work day.

Fast growth

The New Castle facility is the second shredding location apart from the Owego, NY facility. It consists of brand new shredder, full nonferrous downstream and retail scrap metal recycling facility. According to Adam Weitsman, CEO of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, the nonferrous downstream and retail scrap metal facility is 100% environment-friendly, fully paved and conveniently located for customers. The facility currently employs around 25 people. The employee strength will be raised to nearly 45 within a few months of operation. The company expects to process over one million tonnes of ferrous and 300 million pounds of nonferrous metal during the current year. The facility will be open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Expansion spree

The company had recently purchased Watertown, NY-based Empire Recycling in a bid to expand its Jefferson County operations. The facility was renamed to Ben Weitsman of Watertown. In addition to retaining all the employees of Empire Recycling, it had announced to hire five additional employees. The company had also decided to extend the working hours of the facility to make it operational seven-day-a week.
