[SMM Iron & Steel] Australia's Pilbara Ports Reopen After Cyclone Mitchell

Published: Feb 11, 2026 09:19
On February 8, 2026, the Pilbara Port Authority resumed operations at Port Hedland, the world’s largest iron ore export hub, following the passage of Cyclone Mitchell. Other major terminals, including Ashburton, Cape Preston West, and Dampier, resumed operations on February 9. While berths were cleared as a safety precaution on February 6, the quick resumption of activity has eased immediate concerns over a significant disruption to February shipment volumes for BHP and Rio Tinto.

[SMM Coking Coal and Coke Daily Brief] In terms of supply, coking costs decreased this week, coking plant profits increased slightly, and overall production levels remained stable; however, some coking plants experienced sluggish shipments, leading to some accumulation of coke inventory. On the demand side, after continuous restocking earlier, steel mills mostly maintained high coke inventory levels, with low restocking willingness before the Chinese New Year, mainly purchasing as needed. In summary, the coke market will remain in the doldrums before the holiday.
