This creates tiered sensitivity to sulfuric acid price fluctuations, which directly reshape the cost structure and market trend of the manganese industry.

I. High Acid-Consuming Products: Most Exposed to Acid Price Volatility

Electrolytic Manganese Metal

It has the most rigid acid demand among all manganese products. Domestically produced mainly from manganese carbonate ore via wet processing, sulfuric acid serves three core functions: leaching manganese from solid ore to prepare manganese sulfate electrolyte, regulating pH value to remove iron, aluminum, heavy metals and other impurities for high-purity electrolyte, and stabilizing electrolytic cell acidity to ensure normal manganese deposition. Its full-process acid reliance makes its profitability highly vulnerable to sulfuric acid price swings.

Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD)

EMD features a typical “ore leaching-purification + anodic electrolysis” process. Sulfuric acid is used to leach and purify manganese ore into qualified electrolyte, before manganese dioxide is precipitated via anodic oxidation. The whole process relies on a stable acidic system, bringing strong acid consumption rigidity and obvious cost linkage with acid prices.

II. Medium & Low Acid-Consuming Products: Process Differences Create Cost Gaps

Battery-Grade High-Purity Manganese Sulfate

Acid consumption is concentrated in front-end essential procedures, with zero invalid loss. Sulfuric acid is used for ore leaching to produce crude manganese sulfate solution, deep purification to eliminate trace impurities for lithium battery-grade standards, and crystallization pH control to prevent manganese ion hydrolysis and stabilize monohydrate crystal form, ensuring consistent product quality.

Battery-Grade Trimanganese Tetroxide

Cost differentiation mainly depends on whether ore leaching is adopted. The ore-based route consumes acid only in front-end leaching and purification to make high-purity precursor solution and crystals, with zero acid consumption in the subsequent roasting and forming stage. By contrast, the electrolytic manganese flake route eliminates ore leaching, requiring only a small amount of acid to dissolve manganese flakes and adjust pH to avoid hydrolysis, delivering prominent cost advantages amid high acid prices.

Feed-Grade Manganese Sulfate

With loose purity requirements, it adopts a simplified production process. Sulfuric acid is only used for basic ore leaching and simple pH adjustment to remove iron and aluminum impurities. No deep purification or recrystallization is needed, resulting in the lowest acid pressure and mildest cost fluctuations.

III. Industry Deep Game: Acid Prices & Environmental Quotas Force Process Upgrading

Beyond acid price fluctuations, the manganese industry faces dual constraints of cost volatility and strict environmental management. Most manufacturers in the Manganese Triangle rely on local low-grade manganese carbonate ore, which features low manganese content and high impurities. Though low in raw material cost and compatible with old production lines, it generates massive manganese slag after acid leaching.

Strict industrial manganese slag discharge quotas have capped corporate output and restricted capacity expansion. To ease capacity and cost pressures, leading enterprises optimize raw material and process structures: blending high-grade imported manganese oxide ore and adding pre-roasting procedures. This drastically reduces slag output to avoid environmental production limits, cuts invalid acid consumption, hedges high acid costs, and achieves stable capacity, lower costs and reduced environmental risks.

IV. Market Outlook: Process Differentiation Dominates Market Performance

Sulfuric acid prices set the bottom line of manganese product costs, and process differences drive structural market differentiation. High acid-consuming electrolytic manganese and EMD are highly sensitive to acid price changes, while low acid-consuming battery-grade manganese salts and manganese flake-based trimanganese tetroxide boast stronger profit resilience.

In the future, sulfuric acid prices will continue to anchor manganese market cost support. The industry will accelerate the phase-out of backward processes with high slag and acid consumption, and industrial chains will shift toward advanced production modes with high-grade ore proportioning, low acid consumption and high environmental standards, leading to continuous industry pattern optimization.
