[SMM Daily Brief Review of Coking Coal and Coke] News side, some steel mills are expected to raise wet-quenched coke prices by 50 yuan/mt and coke dry quenching prices by 55 yuan/mt, effective from 00:00 on April 1, 2026. In terms of supply, coke producers currently saw good shipments, and coke inventory remained at a relatively low level. Meanwhile, coking costs increased significantly, strengthening coke producers' willingness to increase prices. Demand side, steel sales improved, and steel mills were in the stage of resuming work and production, with hot metal production trending upward, boosting their willingness to procure coke. Overall, the first round of coke price increases may be implemented next week, and the coke market is likely to hold up well in the short term.

[SMM Daily Brief Review on Coking Coal and Coke]

Coking coal market:

Linfen low-sulphur coking coal was quoted at 1,600 yuan/mt. Tangshan low-sulphur coking coal was quoted at 1,560 yuan/mt.

Coking coal, mainstream mines maintained normal production. Recently, coking coal prices stabilized and rebounded, market sentiment improved significantly, and online auction trading volume increased. Some downstream coke and steel enterprises actively made purchases, mine presale orders were strong, and sentiment was optimistic. Coking coal prices may remain generally stable with slight rise next week.

Coke market:

The nationwide average price of first-grade metallurgical coke (dry quenching) was 1,735 yuan/mt. The nationwide average price of quasi-first-grade metallurgical coke (dry quenching) was 1,595 yuan/mt. The nationwide average price of first-grade metallurgical coke (wet quenching) was 1,390 yuan/mt. The nationwide average price of quasi-first-grade metallurgical coke (wet quenching) was 1,300 yuan/mt.

On the news front, some steel mills are expected to raise wet-quenched coke prices by 50 yuan/mt and dry-quenched coke prices by 55 yuan/mt, effective from 00:00 on April 1, 2026. Supply side, current shipments from coke enterprises were relatively good, and coke inventory remained at a low level. [Silicon Metal Prices Shift to Move Sideways, Attention on Operating Rate Changes on Both Supply and Demand Sides]: At the beginning of the week, spot silicon metal prices edged lower in a narrow range before shifting to move sideways. As of May 21, SMM east China oxygen-blown #553 silicon was at 9,100-9,200 yuan/mt, down 150 yuan/mt WoW, and #441 silicon was at 9,300-9,400 yuan/mt, down 150 yuan/mt WoW. The futures market center shifted lower WoW. On Thursday, the most-traded SI2609 contract closed at 8,440 yuan/mt, down 215 yuan/mt WoW, with open interest at 308,000 lots, a WoW decrease of 7,000 lots. In terms of market transactions, as futures weakened at the beginning of the week, some downstream buyers and traders increased their rigid demand purchases, and the market transaction center moved lower WoW. Fundamentals side, both supply and demand of silicon metal are expected to increase in June. Supply side, the main driver is the increase in operating rates of silicon enterprises in Sichuan and Yunnan during the rainy season. Demand side, the main factor is production resumption expectations of individual polysilicon enterprises.
