[SMM PV News] CCECC to Build Nigeria’s First 7 MW Floating Solar Project for University of Lagos

Published: Jan 28, 2026 09:11
The Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria has awarded the contract for the country's first floating solar array to the Nigerian arm of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). This 7 MW project will be constructed on the lagoon waters surrounding the University of Lagos and is designed to supply electricity directly to the institution. Although specific costs and timelines remain undisclosed, the initiative highlights Nigeria's significant potential in this sector, which ranks second in Africa with a theoretical annual generation capacity of 93 TWh. While floating solar remains rare across the continent, development is accelerating with major projects like the 600 MW installation on Lake Kariba, and Nigeria itself has seen strong general solar growth with 1.4 GW added in 2025 to reach over 4.8 GW of cumulative capacity.
