[SMM PV News] Cyprus Wastes Nearly 50% of Renewable Energy in 2025 Due to Storage Deadlock

Published: Jan 14, 2026 13:53
CyprusGrid reports that in 2025, Cyprus curtailed 306 GWh of renewable energy, representing a staggering 47.44% of distribution-connected solar and biogas generation wasted due to grid constraints. This marks an 83% increase in curtailment volume compared to 2024, significantly reducing the effective contribution of new solar capacity and even impacting residential systems. The crisis is driven by the complete absence of large-scale battery storage, which remains stalled by a regulatory standoff between private investors and the state utility regarding EU competition laws. Consequently, the reliance on fossil fuels cost the nation an estimated €15 million in additional carbon allowances and generated 200,000 tonnes of avoidable CO2 emissions last year.
