Ukrainian Railways (UZ) reported on October 15, 2026, that the nation exported 793,000 tonnes of ferrous metals across the border to Poland by rail during the January–September 2026 period. This volume represents a 22% year-on-year decline, vividly illustrating the logistical collapse and production curtailments ravaging Ukraine's remaining heavy industry. [ European Carbon Prices Rise to €88 per Tonne in October ]
Market assessments on October 15, 2026, confirmed that European carbon allowance prices rose to €88 per tonne in early October trading. The pricing momentum was driven by fluctuations in regional energy markets and escalating political uncertainty in the Middle East, demonstrating an inverse correlation with natural gas benchmarks. The sustained high cost of carbon compliance systematically inflates the baseline operating expenditures for European blast furnace operators, degrading their cost competitiveness against imported steel. DCH Group's metallurgical assets in Ukraine, comprising the Suha Balka iron ore mine and the Dniprovsky Metallurgical Plant (DMZ), paid a combined 431.5 million UAH ($10.5 million) in taxes and fees to government budgets during the January–September 2026 period. The substantial financial contribution was achieved despite severe operational constraints, highlighting the critical fiscal role the surviving iron ore and steelmaking footprint plays amidst industry forecasts that national iron ore output could crash by an additional 37% this year.
