Australian Latrobe Magnesium Plant 70% Complete, Aims for 2026 Production Launch
【SMM Magnesium Flash】On September 1st, Latrobe Magnesium of Australia announced that its magnesium demonstration plant in Victoria had reached 70% construction progress, officially entering the final stretch towards commissioning. The core briquetting equipment of the project has been installed and accepted, and plans are underway to initiate step-by-step commissioning, with the goal of producing the first batch of metallic magnesium in the second half of 2026. Relying on brown coal ash solid waste resources, the plant has been steadily producing high-purity magnesium oxide and has secured a prepayment of US$2 million from the US-based Metal Exchange to lock in sales. With the advancement of the demonstration line, overseas magnesium supply is expected to be slightly supplemented, but large-scale commercial production lines still require financing and approval to be finalized, with a longer capacity release cycle.
