IMIP Highlights Pivotal Role in Indonesia's Industrialization, Attracting US$34.3B in Investments

Published: May 20, 2025 23:50
During the Indonesia Investment Talk Series on May 19, 2025, Emilia Bassar, Director of Communications at PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), highlighted IMIP’s pivotal role in attracting foreign investment and advancing Indonesia’s industrialization, particularly in the nickel downstream sector. Located in Central Sulawesi, IMIP has successfully drawn US$ 34.3 billion in investments between 2015 and 2024 from countries such as China, Australia, India, Japan, and South Korea, and generated US$ 15.4 billion in export foreign exchange. With 51 tenants currently in production across three main industrial clusters—stainless steel, carbon steel, and electric vehicle (EV) battery raw materials—IMIP has also become a major employment hub, providing jobs for approximately 85,000 local workers, 30% of whom are from Morowali Regency. To further increase investment inflow, IMIP has implemented a three-fold strategy focusing on legal certainty through supportive regulations and licensing frameworks, operational efficiency by developing infrastructure like ports, airports, and healthcare facilities, and long-term sustainability through environmental initiatives and local workforce development, positioning itself as a model for integrated industrial development in Indonesia.

May 21 — According to Indonesian Ministry of Trade meeting materials, Indonesia plans to bring ferroalloy exports under its strategic natural resources export framework. Ferroalloy exports are expected to enter a transition period from June 1 to August 31, 2026, before being handled by a designated state-owned enterprise from September 1. Ferronickel/NPI, under HS code 7202.60.00, is listed within the ferroalloy scope. SMM believes the policy, if implemented, may disrupt Indonesian NPI customs clearance, shipment schedules and trade procedures in the short term. However, the document does not directly indicate an export ban or unified pricing mechanism.
