According to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), China's copper semis production in November 2024 reached 2.1401 million mt, up 8.8% MoM.

China's copper processing industry continued its trend of regional cluster development. In November, the top five provinces in copper semis production were Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Anhui, accounting for 27.6%, 12.8%, 12.8%, 10.3%, and 7.9% of the total production, respectively. Together, these five provinces contributed 71.4% of the total copper semis production.

Specifically, in November, the center of copper prices dropped significantly, downstream orders for related copper semis performed well, and copper semis production increased notably, reaching a new high for the year. China's copper semis production in November rose 8.8% MoM, rebounding from 1.9664 million mt in October to 2.1401 million mt. By province, among the top ten provinces and cities in November, only Gansu province saw a decline in production to 54,200 mt, down 5.41% MoM. Other provinces and cities showed growth, with Tianjin, Jiangxi, Anhui, and Hubei provinces recording increases of over 10%, with specific production volumes of 58,700 mt, 590,800 mt, 168,100 mt, and 95,100 mt, respectively.

SMMhas been closely monitoring the consumption trends and operating rates of enterprises in the copper semis market. As the year-end approaches, the copper processing industry will gradually enter the off-season, leading to a decline in demand for copper semis compared to November. However, the copper pipe & tube industry is currently in its peak season, driving an increase in demand for copper semis. SMM expects China's copper semis production in December to drop back slightly.

Chile's Water Crisis Threatens Atacama's Copper and Lithium Mining Amid 14-Year Drought
Chile’s most pressing crisis at present is the issue of water resources. The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest regions in the world and also the core area for copper and lithium ore extraction. The local area has experienced a drought for as long as 14 years, and reservoir storage has fallen to only about 30%. For miners, water resources are not a secondary issue, but an indispensable key production factor in such processes as ore processing, dust suppression, and equipment cooling. The decline in ore grade has further exacerbated the predicament

Trump Adjusts Metal Tariffs, Applies 50% Rate to Consumer Prices Under Section 232, Details Unclear
US President Trump adjusted the national security tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and copper, lowering the tariff rates on derivative products made from these metals, streamlining compliance procedures, and preventing the declared value of imports from being understated.A senior Trump administration official said that, under a proclamation signed by Trump, the US would continue to maintain a 50% import tariff on imports of metal commodities such as steel, aluminum, and copper pursuant to Section 232 of the Trade Act of 1974, but would apply this rate to the price paid by US consumers. It is currently unclear how the selling price—and the resulting tariffs—would be determined.
