SEMI report showed that global silicon wafer shipments in the first quarter of 2023 fell by 9.0% from the previous quarter to 3.27 billion square inches, down 11.3% from 3.68 billion square inches in the same period last year. Anna-Riikka Vuorikari-Antikainen, Chairman of SEMI SMG, said that the decline reflected weak demand for semiconductors since the beginning of the year. Storage and consumer electronics saw the largest drops in silicon wafer demand, while applications in the automobile and industrial sectors remained stable.
