SMM survey: what kind of metal do you like most in 2022?

On December 23, according to relevant reports, the first 8-inch high-power chip production project in Shandong completed the commissioning of all the equipment and successfully opened the line in Jinan BYD Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

In the first 11 months of this year, China's cumulative sales of new energy vehicles reached 3.023 million, an increase of 167.4 percent over the same period last year, and sales of new energy passenger vehicles totaled 2.869 million, an increase of 178 percent over the same period last year. Of these, 450000 new energy vehicles were sold in November, with a penetration rate of 17.84 percent, and 427000 new energy passenger vehicles were sold, with a penetration rate of 19.48 percent, or 20 percent in December.

For the new energy vehicles represented by electric vehicles, electrification management has become the main variable of automobile reform. Subsequently, after automobile electrification, a large number of power devices will be added, such as thermal management system, charging inverter system, motor drive control system and so on. IGBT has become the main incremental chip of automobile electrification.

According to the Omdia 2020 report, the size of China's automotive IGBT market in 2019 is 280 million US dollars. With the higher-than-expected growth of the new energy vehicle industry, the demand for regulation-level IGBT has also entered the explosive stage.

According to the public data of Omdia, the IGBT module used by BYD motor drive controller ranked second in the world in 2019, second only to Infineon, with a market share of 18%, ranking first among domestic manufacturers. Even so, BYD is not self-sufficient. In 2020, BYD sold 189700 new energy vehicles; in the first 11 months of 2021, it sold 509800 new energy vehicles, a nearly tripling increase over the same period last year; and according to BYD's forecast, it will sell 1.5 million new energy vehicles next year.

On the supply side, from 2018 to 2020, the output of BYD semiconductor power modules is 1.4057 million, 921000 and 1.0083 million respectively, which is in a downward trend as a whole, while its automobile production and sales volume has doubled year by year. Obviously, BYD has a shortage of IGBT supply, which will become more prominent in 2022.

In order to solve the problem of insufficient production of its own, recently, BYD officially placed an order of 100 million yuan for regulation-grade IGBT, to Shilan Wei. at the same time, it issued orders to Starr Semiconductor, time Electric, China Resources Micro and other local enterprises with vehicle specification-grade IGBT production capacity, and began to lay out for next year to ensure the demand for IGBT from the surging production of new energy vehicles.

The smooth progress of BYD's 8-inch high-power chip production project in Shandong will help it enhance the self-sufficiency of power chips and accelerate the development of its automotive business.

[SMM Tungsten Express] APT CIF Rotterdam offers held steady at $3,000-3,200/mtu this week, up $50 from last week. Transactions remain light, but the rebound in Chinese tungsten prices has boosted European sentiment, with holders maintaining firm offers and few low-priced sources available. Prices are expected to consolidate at high levels in the near term. Indian scrap drill tips FOB rose 9.52% to $110-120/kg, driven by the rally in China.

Limited Support from Raw Material Side, Magnesium Products Overall in the Doldrums This Week [SMM Magnesium Weekly Review]
[SMM Magnesium Weekly Review: Limited Support from Raw Materials, Magnesium Products Overall in the Doldrums This Week] This week, prices of various products across the industry chain followed magnesium ingots in a weak consolidation trend. Dolomite supplies were replenished adequately across regions; although raw materials tightened in some areas, overall inventory remained ample, and ex-factory prices stayed stable. Magnesium ingot prices in major producing areas first declined then stabilized during the week, with weekly quotes lowered by 250 yuan/mt. Low-priced factories held back from selling, supporting prices to stop falling, while downstream buyers restocked on an as-needed basis. FOB quotes at Tianjin port saw limited fluctuations, and a wait-and-see approach outside China led to sluggish transactions. Magnesium powder stabilized after declining alongside raw materials, with both domestic and external demand in the off-season, limited to just-in-time procurement. Magnesium alloy prices weakened, dragged down by raw materials. Demand divergence was evident, with moderate automotive orders but weak two-wheeler demand. The market faced oversupply, and enterprises lowered processing fees to boost shipments.
