A patent for a new rare earth mineral smelting technology in Baotou rare Earth Research Institute has been granted by Japan.

Recently, Baotou rare Earth Research Institute and Bayan Obo rare Earth Resources and Comprehensive Utilization State key Laboratory applied for "treatment of fluorinated rare earth mineral particles" by the Japanese invention patent authorization number JP2020-500133.

Cui Jianguo, deputy director of the Institute of Wet process of Baotou rare Earth Research Institute, said that since 2015, the rare earth separation and application team of Baotou rare Earth Research Institute has changed the research idea of the end treatment of the "three wastes" of Bayan Obo mixed rare earth concentrate into the source treatment idea of "giving priority to the comprehensive utilization of fluorine, phosphorus, calcium, thorium and other resources, supplemented by the extraction of rare earth resources". The patent technology of the invention is an innovative technology with strong mineral adaptability, high resource utilization and environment-friendly formed by the team through three generations of self-technological innovation.

The core idea of this technology is to give priority to the decomposition of fluorine-bearing mineral particles such as fluorocarbon cerite, fluorite and apatite in the complex system of mixed rare earth concentrate at lower temperature and acidity, so as to avoid the decomposition of sulfuric acid and reduce the difficulty of recovering fluorine resources in tail gas. greatly improve the purity of monazite in the residue and create conditions for the recovery of phosphorus resources.

Wang Zhe, an engineer from the rare earth separation and application team, said that the Japanese invention patent authorization shows that the patent innovation has been internationally recognized and marks a new breakthrough in the field of comprehensive utilization of mixed rare earth mineral resources in complex systems. The demonstration project of clean smelting process of Bayan Obo mixed rare earth concentrate designed around the core patent is strongly supported by Northern rare Earth (Group) Co., Ltd., at the same time, the achievement was also organized to declare the "Strategic Mineral Resources Development and Utilization" project, a key special project of the Ministry of Science and Technology in the "14th five-year Plan".
