The Indonesian Iron and Steel Association said the country's steel industry had been hit hard despite anti-dumping duties on many types of steel products from China and other countries.
Kartasasmita notes that the country's steel industry currently uses only 40 per cent of its capacity, in part because of a lack of raw materials. If the country's steel mills can improve utilization, they can meet 70% of the demand for domestic steel products.
At present, scrap metal is on Indonesia's list of hazardous and toxic waste, and enterprises need to obtain the corresponding license and license to import such goods. When import rules are relaxed, scrap metals will be withdrawn from the list, making it easier to import.
Indonesia is expected to import 5 million tons of scrap metal after the policy is relaxed, but he did not say when the new rules would take effect.
