SHANGHAI, Aug. 16 (SMM) – The monsoon season is around the corner in Surigao, the Philippines, and Chinese NPI producers usually enter the market in preparation for stockpiling.

SMM surveys find that most of NPI producers are busy in requiring goods, but some ones in south China have no stockpiling plans, only building normal inventories.

Philippines Reports 24 Per cent Decline in Nickel Ore Output in 1H 2017

SMM attributes this to following factors. First, current ore prices are high, growing their worries on goods purchases at highs. Second, ore shortages may not be as tight as that seen last year as Indonesia has allowed ore exports. Third, ore shipments from Surigao, the Philippines will fall in the monsoon season, but other mines will keep outward shipments.

[SMM Analysis] June Nickel Sulphate Market Analysis: Price Under Pressure from Rising Costs and Supply-Demand Mismatch
While upstream MHP payables stayed high, auxiliary material prices such as sulphur and sulphuric acid continued to climb, and downstream ternary production schedules remained at high levels, the performance of battery-grade nickel sulphate prices was not optimistic. SMM believes this was driven by multiple factors, including weakening cost support, front-loaded downstream stockpiling, increased import supplementation, and higher volumes of nickel sulphate converted from refined nickel.
