MUMBAI (Scrap Register): National Aluminium Company (NALCO) has planned to reduce its aluminium production cost by around 8 to 9 per cent by brownfield expansion and energy-efficient technologies.
NALCO is planning a brownfield expansion of its plant at Angul, Odisha and is also undertaking modernization of the existing plant at the site.
NALCO will be setting up its second aluminium smelter at Angul in Odisha. The company had earlier identified Sundergarh as a location to set up the smelter along with the power complex.
However, due to issues related to infrastructure such as water, the company has decided to set up the project at Angul, which is the location of its first smelter as well.
The project is estimated to cost Rs. 14,000 crore. From this, the aluminium smelter of capacity 0.4 million tonnes is estimated to cost Rs. 10,000 crore and the power plant of capacity 500-mw is expected to cost Rs. 3,000 crore.
