Off-Season Demand Is Weak and Raw Materials Are Firm, Stainless Steel Costs Rise and Profits Narrow [SMM Analysis]

[SMM Analysis] Weak Off-Season Demand and Firm Raw Materials Drive Up Stainless Steel Costs, Narrowing Profits This week, stainless steel production costs edged up slightly, while product prices remained stable overall, leading to a slight narrowing of steel mill profit margins. Using 304 cold-rolled as the calculation benchmark, the current raw material-calculated profit margin was 2.16%, while the inventory raw material-calculated profit margin was 1.44%. Nickel-based raw material cost side, this week high-grade NPI prices edged up. Although the market has entered the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel, with weak end-use demand, insufficient market confidence, and strong steel mill desires to bargain down prices, the limited production cuts for 300-series stainless steel in June meant a relatively small decline in demand for high-grade NPI. Combined with persistent disturbances from Indonesian news and a firm stance on holding prices from upstream players, these factors collectively drove high-grade NPI prices to hold up well. As of this Friday, the mainstream grade of 10%-12% high-grade NPI rose by 0.5 yuan per nickel unit, closing at 1,144 yuan per nickel unit. Stainless steel scrap market side, this week stainless steel scrap prices edged up. Driven by the linkage effect of firm spot finished steel and strong high-grade NPI, scrap prices also moved higher synchronously. However, under the suppression of multiple bearish factors such as weak demand in the traditional off-season, tight supply of tax invoices, and steel mill process limitations, its upside room was limited. Currently, bullish and bearish factors are counterbalancing each other, and it is expected that in the short term, stainless steel scrap prices will mainly remain stable. As of this Friday, mainstream 304 off-cut prices in Shanghai rose by 100 yuan/mt, with the latest quotation at approximately 10,450 yuan/mt. Chrome-based raw material cost side, this week high-carbon ferrochrome prices remained stable. Although in the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel, in June steel...

This week, stainless steel production costs edged up slightly, while product prices remained largely stable, resulting in a slight narrowing of steel mill profits. Using 304 cold-rolled coil as the calculation benchmark, the profit margin was 2.16% based on current raw material costs and 1.44% based on inventory costs.

On the nickel-based raw material cost side, prices for high-grade NPI edged up this week. Although the market has entered the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel—with weak end-use demand, low market confidence, and strong desire from steel mills to bargain down prices—production cuts for 300-series stainless steel in June were limited, leading to a relatively small decline in demand for high-grade NPI. Coupled with ongoing disruptions from news in Indonesia and the firm hold prices sentiment upstream, these factors jointly drove high-grade NPI prices to hold up well. As of this Friday, mainstream high-grade NPI with a grade of 10%-12% rose by 0.5 yuan per nickel unit, closing at 1,144 yuan per nickel unit.

In the stainless steel scrap market, scrap prices edged up this week. Driven by the spillover effect of firm finished steel product spot prices and the strength of high-grade NPI, scrap material prices rose in tandem. However, upward room was constrained by multiple bearish factors such as weak demand during the traditional off-season, tight tax invoice supply, and process limitations at steel mills. With bullish and bearish factors currently offsetting each other in the market, stainless steel scrap prices are expected to remain largely stable in the short term. As of this Friday, mainstream 304 off-cuts prices in Shanghai rose by 100 yuan/mt, with the latest quotation around 10,450 yuan/mt.

On the chrome-based raw material cost side, high-carbon ferrochrome prices remained stable this week. Although in the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel, steel mills' June tender prices for high-carbon ferrochrome held steady, and overall production cuts at stainless steel mills were limited, with demand still maintained at a relatively high level. Recent purchases by steel mills, combined with power rationing news in Inner Mongolia, kept high-carbon ferrochrome prices largely stable. However, chrome ore inventories at ports remained at historically high levels, leading to sustained oversupply pressure and posing a pullback risk for high-carbon ferrochrome prices. As of this Friday, mainstream high-carbon ferrochrome prices in Inner Mongolia were flat WoW, closing at 8,325 yuan/mt (50% metal content).

This week, ferrous metals diverged, with coking coal and coke extending their strength, iron ore making some concessions, and finished steel moving sideways. Early in the week, rumors about coal mine safety inspections continued to swirl, and expectations of supply tightness intensified, driving coking coal to its daily limit up. Against weak supply-demand fundamentals, iron ore took a path of conceding to coking coal and coke, while finished steel edged higher in a narrow range; later in the week, data on the five major steel products were released, with HRC inventory destocking continuing, the off-season effect on construction steel demand emerging, inventory destocking narrowing, and overall inventory pressure for finished steel also beginning to slowly accumulate......

[HRC] HRC export prices remained stable day on day today, with transaction prices at 496-504 USD/tonne. A major mill in north China reported that its transaction price fell by more than 5-10 USD/tonne WoW this week, and its prices remained higher than other resources, at around 515 USD/tonne. The presence of tax-exclusive prices in the market has made it more difficult for some regular traders to close deals. It is learned that tax-exclusive prices are even 10 USD/tonne lower than the market’s lowest tax-inclusive prices. [Rebar] Rebar export FOB quotations remained stable today, with transaction prices mostly concentrated at 492-495 USD/tonne. Shipments are mostly scheduled for August, and some steel mills have full order books, with deliveries already scheduled from September to October. According to feedback from some market traders, recent inquiries for wire rod have been moderate, overseas buyers remain cautious and on the sidelines, and their psychological price levels are generally lower than current offers. [Steel Billet] The export transaction price for steel billet was 473-475 USD/tonne today, holding steady day on day. Recently, offers from steel mills in north China were at around 478 USD/tonne, but it is reported that deals cannot be reached for high-priced resources. Currently, most shipments are scheduled for August, with a few in September. It is learned that a few mills in east China have maintenance plans in June and will continue to control their order intake in the short term. In addition, some mills in north China have recently taken new rebar orders, so they are temporarily reducing the volume of steel billet available for ordering.
