[Relatively Firm Support from Raw Material Side; Non-Oriented Silicon Steel Market May Be in the Doldrums Next Week] This week, spot prices of cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel in the Shanghai market remained stable, with overall market transactions performing moderately. Market feedback indicated that current market demand was sluggish, with downstream motor enterprises being cautious in procurement, primarily making just-in-time procurement. The relatively firm support from the raw material side provided certain support for spot silicon steel prices, and traders mainly sold at par prices.

Non-Oriented Silicon Steel Price Dynamics

Shanghai B50A800 grade: 4,400-4,400 yuan/mt

Guangzhou B50A800 grade: 4,350-4,350 yuan/mt

Wuhan 50WW800 grade: 4,320-4,320 yuan/mt

Shanghai market: This week, spot prices of cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel in the Shanghai market remained stable, with overall market transactions performing mediocrely. Market feedback indicated that current market demand was weak, downstream motor enterprises were cautious in procurement, mainly making just-in-time procurement; raw material support remained relatively firm, providing certain support for spot silicon steel prices, and traders mainly sold at flat prices. Overall, spot prices of cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel in the Shanghai market are expected to be in the doldrums next week.

Guangzhou market: This week, cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel prices in the Guangzhou market remained temporarily stable, with a mediocre trading atmosphere. Market feedback indicated that current ordering costs from state-owned steel mills remained firm, but downstream motor enterprises purchased as needed with moderate purchasing enthusiasm, traders mainly kept quotations stable, and there was some room for negotiation in actual transactions. Overall, cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel prices in the Guangzhou market are expected to show a trend of being in the doldrums next week.

Wuhan market: This week, the cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel market in Wuhan was in the doldrums, with a lukewarm trading atmosphere. Market feedback indicated that steel mill June futures prices remained firm, but circulating resources from local state-owned steel mills in the market increased somewhat, downstream end-users' purchasing pace was slow, market trading inventory edged up, and traders held cautious expectations for the market outlook. Overall, spot prices of cold-rolled non-oriented silicon steel in the Wuhan market are expected to be in the doldrums next week.

Off-Season Demand Is Weak and Raw Materials Are Firm, Stainless Steel Costs Rise and Profits Narrow [SMM Analysis]
[SMM Analysis] Weak Off-Season Demand and Firm Raw Materials Drive Up Stainless Steel Costs, Narrowing Profits This week, stainless steel production costs edged up slightly, while product prices remained stable overall, leading to a slight narrowing of steel mill profit margins. Using 304 cold-rolled as the calculation benchmark, the current raw material-calculated profit margin was 2.16%, while the inventory raw material-calculated profit margin was 1.44%. Nickel-based raw material cost side, this week high-grade NPI prices edged up. Although the market has entered the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel, with weak end-use demand, insufficient market confidence, and strong steel mill desires to bargain down prices, the limited production cuts for 300-series stainless steel in June meant a relatively small decline in demand for high-grade NPI. Combined with persistent disturbances from Indonesian news and a firm stance on holding prices from upstream players, these factors collectively drove high-grade NPI prices to hold up well. As of this Friday, the mainstream grade of 10%-12% high-grade NPI rose by 0.5 yuan per nickel unit, closing at 1,144 yuan per nickel unit. Stainless steel scrap market side, this week stainless steel scrap prices edged up. Driven by the linkage effect of firm spot finished steel and strong high-grade NPI, scrap prices also moved higher synchronously. However, under the suppression of multiple bearish factors such as weak demand in the traditional off-season, tight supply of tax invoices, and steel mill process limitations, its upside room was limited. Currently, bullish and bearish factors are counterbalancing each other, and it is expected that in the short term, stainless steel scrap prices will mainly remain stable. As of this Friday, mainstream 304 off-cut prices in Shanghai rose by 100 yuan/mt, with the latest quotation at approximately 10,450 yuan/mt. Chrome-based raw material cost side, this week high-carbon ferrochrome prices remained stable. Although in the traditional consumption off-season for stainless steel, in June steel...

[SMM Iron & Steel] Turkey’s HRC Imports Rise 8.1% in Jan-Apr 2026 as Supplier Balance Shifts Away from China
According to preliminary data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), Turkey's hot rolled coil (HRC) imports in April 2026 reached 334,852 metric tons (mt), an increase of 8.2% month-on-month and 46.7% year-on-year, with the import value totaling $181.10 million (+9.2% m-o-m, +38.8% y-o-y). For the January-April 2026 period, total HRC imports amounted to 1,141,364 mt, up 8.1% year-on-year, while the total value rose 3.3% to $620.42 million. In terms of suppliers, Russia became the largest source with 248,889 mt (+9.2% y-o-y), followed by China, which saw a massive 39.6% drop to 229,800 mt, and Malaysia with 223,029 mt. The market impact indicates a clear structural rebalancing of Turkey's HRC supply chain; driven by recent trade defense measures targeting Chinese products, Turkish importers are actively diversifying their supply risks toward Russia, Malaysia, and other origins, demonstrating that while domestic demand remains resilient, procurement has become highly selective regarding price and origin advantages.

[SMM Iron & Steel] India’s NMDC Plans $5.22 Billion Investment to Double Iron Ore Output to 100 Million MT
Indian state-run miner NMDC Limited has announced a massive investment plan of $5.22 billion over the next three years to almost double its iron ore production capacity to 100 million metric tons (mt) per year, up from the 52 million mt produced in the 2025-2026 fiscal year. The company will deploy around $626 million in the current fiscal year, with capital expenditures rising to $1.04 billion in each subsequent year. The strategic expansion also includes $208 million earmarked for the acquisition of overseas critical mineral assets, and a separate $313 million investment to construct a blending yard at the port of Vishakhapatnam for branded value-added iron ore products. The market impact highlights NMDC's aggressive vertical integration and capacity expansion to secure domestic raw material supply for India's booming crude steel sector. By venturing into overseas acquisitions and branded blended ores, NMDC is strategically positioning itself to reduce India's vulnerability to global supply chain shocks while fully capitalizing on the nation's rapid industrial consumption growth.
