Dubai-based developer Amea Power has commissioned its 120MW Doornhoek solar project in South Africa’s North West province. The USD 120 million project is the first awarded under South Africa’s REIPPPP Bid Window 6 to reach commercial operation, with USD 100 million in debt financing provided by Standard Bank South Africa. Doornhoek is Amea Power’s first operational asset in South Africa, while the company is also developing two battery storage projects of more than 300MWh each in the same province. SMM believes the project reflects the gradual delivery of South Africa’s renewable procurement pipeline, with solar-plus-storage set to play a larger role in easing power shortages and improving grid flexibility.
