Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz, Prohibits Vessel Passage Amid Tensions with US

Published: Apr 19, 2026 18:49
A spokesperson for Iran's military stated that, given the US's "repeated failure to honor its commitments," control of the Strait of Hormuz had been restored to its previous status and was now under the strict control of Iran's armed forces. According to shipping sources, multiple commercial vessels received radio notifications from the Iranian navy informing them that the Strait of Hormuz was once again closed and that passage by any vessel was prohibited. Ship tracking data showed that approximately 10 vessels attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz on April 18 but ultimately turned back.
