[SMM PV News] Brazil Approves First Co-Located Solar and BESS Project

Published: Apr 9, 2026 09:34
Brazil's National Electric Energy Agency ('Aneel') has granted the country's first authorization for a co-located battery energy storage system ('BESS') integrated with a solar plant. The lithium-ion system, boasting a 5 MWh capacity and 1.25 MW output, is linked to Statkraft's Sol de Brotas 7 photovoltaic facility in Bahia. Physically integrated into the solar plant's infrastructure, the 'BESS' will store surplus generation and dispatch it to the grid on demand. The broader Sol de Brotas complex also shares transmission infrastructure with nearby wind farms. This milestone sets a vital regulatory precedent for Brazil's evolving energy storage market.
