Overseas alumina is expected to flow into China in June

SMM June 20 Report

In May 2025, China exported 207,800 mt of alumina, up 104.6% YoY; imported 67,500 mt of alumina, down 26.3% YoY; and had a net import of -140,300 mt of alumina in May.

From January to May 2025, China's cumulative imports of alumina reached 167,000 mt, down 85.4% YoY; cumulative exports of alumina amounted to 1.1723 million mt, up 79.4% YoY; and cumulative net imports of alumina stood at -1.0053 million mt.

In May 2025, the portion of China's alumina exports to Russia accounted for 88.28% of the total export volume, with Russia remaining the primary destination for China's alumina exports. From January to May 2025, China exported a cumulative 780,000 mt of alumina to Russia, accounting for 66.6% of the total export volume. In June, China's alumina export window remained closed, and Russia was still expected to be the main destination for China's alumina exports. In June, domestic alumina import profits mainly hovered around the break-even line, and imports of alumina into China were anticipated. However, overall, alumina was expected to maintain a net export pattern.
