Quebec Premier Suggests Export Taxes on Aluminum Amid US Tariff Threat

Publicado: Feb 16, 2025 21:28
On February 12 local time, François Legault, the Premier of Quebec, Canada, stated that Canada should consider imposing export taxes on products such as aluminum to increase leverage in negotiations with the Trump administration. Legault mentioned that Canada should retaliate against the US only if Trump actually imposes tariffs on Canada as a trading partner. According to a statement released by the White House, the steel and aluminum tariff measures signed by Trump will take effect on March 12. Based on data from the US Department of Commerce, last year Canada accounted for nearly 60% of US aluminum import volume, with the majority coming from Quebec.
