La sudafricana Sasol planea aumentar la inversión en sus propias minas de carbón para asegurar la materia prima de sus operaciones en Secunda y, al mismo tiempo, reducir las compras de carbón a proveedores externos. La empresa produjo 28,4 millones de toneladas de carbón de sus propias minas en el ejercicio 2026 y espera que esta cifra aumente a entre 30 y 32 millones de toneladas en el ejercicio 2027, antes de subir aún más hasta los 34 millones de toneladas en 2028. Mientras tanto, Sasol prevé que sus compras externas de carbón disminuyan de 8,8 millones de toneladas en el ejercicio 2026 a entre 5 y 7 millones de toneladas en el ejercicio 2027. Sasol invirtió 1.000 millones de rands para convertir la planta de lavado de carbón de exportación de Twistdraai en una instalación de eliminación de estériles. La instalación ya entrega carbón procesado con un contenido de hundidos inferior al 12 %. La mejora de la calidad del carbón, la mayor disponibilidad de los gasificadores y la ausencia de una parada programada en el ejercicio 2026 contribuyeron conjuntamente a que la producción anual de las operaciones de Secunda alcanzara un máximo de cinco años de 7,2 millones de toneladas. Con una parada programada prevista para el ejercicio 2027, la empresa espera que la instalación produzca entre 7,2 y 7,4 millones de toneladas durante el año. El gasto de capital en minería aumentó de 2.900 millones de rands en el ejercicio 2024 a 4.100 millones de rands en el ejercicio 2026, y se espera que aumente entre 1.000 y 1.500 millones de rands adicionales en el ejercicio 2027, incluida la inversión en un proyecto de sustitución de pozos.
