Fed Cuts Interest Rates for First Time in Four Years, Signaling Further Easing Ahead

Publicado: Sep 19, 2024 07:14
The Federal Reserve recently announced that it would lower the target range for the federal funds rate by 50 basis points to 4.75%-5%, marking the first interest rate cut in four years. Over the past nearly four years, the Fed has undergone a nearly unprecedented round of aggressive interest rate hikes, starting in March 2022 and maintaining a high range of 5.25%-5.5% since July 2023. In its statement, the Fed expressed greater confidence in the sustained decline of inflation towards 2%, while believing that the risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals are roughly balanced. Moreover, the dot plot released by the Fed indicated a significant downward revision in the median expectation for the federal funds rate next year to 4.4%, from the previous 5.1%, suggesting the possibility of another 50 basis points rate cut by the end of the year.
