According to data from the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), the actual value added in the mining industry in Jamaica increased by 102% in the third quarter of 2023. This is mainly due to the fact that the increase in alumina production was greater than the decrease in bauxite ore production.
In this quarter, the capacity utilization rate of Jamaican alumina production increased by 24.5 percentage points, reaching 42.4%. The increase in alumina production reached 136.6%, mainly driven by the improved capacity utilization of the Windalco and Jamalco refineries.
On the other hand, the average utilization rate of Jamaican bauxite ore decreased by 2.1 percentage points to 40.7%. Bauxite ore production decreased by 4.9%, mainly due to a decrease in demand from overseas buyers.
